Ruby Sparks: a sharp and smart comedy

After the success of their very well-known Little Miss Sunshine in 2006, Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris, have decided to give birth to a new movie: Ruby Sparks (came out in 2012).

If the movie is definitely in a complete different genre, the humor and the creativity remain intact.

SYNOPSIS: Calvin is a young novelist who achieved phenomenal success early in his career but is now struggling with his writing. Finally, he makes a breakthrough and creates a character named Ruby who inspires him. What is going to happen when he discovers Ruby, in flesh and bone, in his living room, acting like they have known each others for a while?

As a newspaper from Toronto said, the movie reminds a little bit of Woody Allen in his glorious years. Very sarcastic, ironic, unexpected, but simple at the same time, really efficient and touching.

The actors did a really good job in playing their parts. Although Paul Dano plays really well, I thought that Zoe Kazan was outstanding. Her freshness really carries the movie.

I particularly enjoyed the creativity and the imagination that inhabit Ruby Sparks. The reflection about the headiness of controlling someone completely is very interesting and reliable.

This theme is not approached very often and I believe that a new door to the world of the writing has just been opened.

I really appreciated how contrasted the atmosphere of the movie is. It is not a bland love story, a lot of dark nuances give the viewer a bitter after taste and a glimpse of what would happen if we could control someone, totally.

However, Ruby Sparks is a happy movie. Not a happy-light-stupid movie but more like a happy-light movie that remains interesting because of the sparkle of genius that it holds.

I don't want to write too much about it because I don't want go give any spoilers away. Nevertheless, if you are a writer, if you like to write or to read, if you like smart comedies, you should watch Ruby Sparks, as it is a very well-made movie that won't let you indifferent.
