Django Unchained : bloody and violent but with a touch of humor

Those last years, I've really thought that Tarantino's level had really dropped. For example, I didn't enjoyed Inglorious Basterds at all. I find it too violent, meaningless and tasteless. I think that his best movie is Pulp Fiction. The others are more violent and less philosophical. So the question was : did Tarantino's talent run away? The answer is no.

SYNOPSIS : With the help of a German bounty hunter, a freed black slave sets out to rescue his wife from a brutal Mississippi plantation owner.

What I think about this movie ? Demonstration through four points.

First, I really enjoyed the atmosphere. The action takes place during the 19th century, but the sets are western's. The landscapes are beautiful, poetic, and really amazing! The picture is very esthetic and neat.

Then, the actors are great. I think that it is the first time that Leonardo DiCaprio plays a vilain and he's actually really good at it! Jamie Foxx is really touching and strong at the same time but the best is Christoph Waltz, which plays the German bounty hunter. His humor is amazing and he has a funny German accent which gives a really cool side to his character.

The music is incredible, beautiful and goes perfectly with the movie atmosphere - which is serious (through the slave subject) but at the same, it's full of humor, absurd scenes. This mix gives a special side to the film.

Last but not least, even if the subject is really sensible (there is a lot of polemics about the "nigger" term which is used a lot in the movie), Tarantino expresses his hate against the slave age, not only against white people but also against anyone who helped them (in the movie there is a black butler who helps the plantation owner). Every scene is really studied, the dialogues are great (as usual in Tarantino's movies) and the actions scenes are very well done and impressive!

But, because there are always weaknesses in a movie, there are a couple of things that I didn't liked.

I think that there is too much wanton violence. Some scenes are really shocking and even if this really happended, I think that there are limits to what we can show in a movie. For example, there are torture scenes which are extremely violent and bloody and even if blood doesn't bother me because it looks really fake, it makes me uncumfortable to watch people being beated to death or eaten by dogs.

The other weakness is the length of the movie which is almost three hours, it is really too long. Some scenes are pulling the rope and it is just too much.

However, I do not recommande this movie for children or sensible souls but if you understand second degree humor, are not afraid of blood or violence, then you really might enjoy Django Unchained!
